You know what I'm talking about. Like a child waits for his or her birthday. Like a patient waiting for the test results to come back. Like an expectant mother waiting for her baby. Like a couple waiting on the closing date to purchase their dream home. Like a student waiting for summer or graduation. Like the laborer waiting for quitting time or the weekend.
We all have to wait at times. Wait for someone else to get ready before leaving the house. Waiting for someone to make a decision in the market place. Waiting for rain to come and for crops to grow. Waiting for Mr. or Miss Right to come along to get married. Waiting for a new vehicle or a package to arrive in the mail.
This morning my thoughts turn to a different kind of waiting. Waiting for an event. Not the next Super Bowl or World Series. Not for the next election. Not for the next blockbuster movie. No, I'm waiting for some news. Some big news. A future event. THE RETURN OF JESUS.
When He comes all else will be insignificant in comparison. Many have waited. It could be anytime now. We are closer than ever before. Soon the Father will look at His Son and say, "Now. Go get your bride." Jesus will return. His children will be caught up in the air with Him. Millions will be left behind. They will wonder what happened. They will speculate about where all those people disappeared.
Experts will come up with theories. Some will talk about the second coming. Scoffers will rebut that option. Some others will say all those people were captured by alien life forces are held hostage. I am sure there will be others.
I can't think of any better news for Christians than that Jesus will return. He will come again. While this is great news for followers of Jesus it is horrific news for those who'll be left behind to endure seven years of tribulation. Unimaginable horrors and persecution will mark those days. People will still have the opportunity to turn to Jesus but those will be hard years. Many will be persecuted and martyred.
The return of Jesus is long awaited news. One day people won't write about it anticipating the future. They will write about in the past tense. He will return. He told us. He promised. Jesus keeps His promise.
Two scriptures in closing.
Matthew 24:36-42 (ESV)
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,
39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.
41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.
42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
Revelation 22:20 (ESV)
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
