A Thousand Voices

A thousand voices shout inside my head,
They linger nightly when I'm in bed,
Each vying for my undivided attention,
Producing massive chaos and contention,
"Pay attention to me!" one loudly shouts,
Others demand to be heard in sullen pout,
A different one wants his advice heeded,
Still another for my attention he pleaded,
It is too much - stirring up much confusion,
All unwanted an unwelcomed intrusion,
Then I remember sweet words to my soul,
To strengthen, exhort as well as to console,
"Be still and know that I am God," I read,
Holy Words You a long time ago once said,
I cease striving listening for only Your voice,
A thousand voices cease in You I rejoice.
