Forsaken

Jeremiah 2:13 (NKJV)
13  "For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns--broken cisterns that can hold no water.

People are thirsty. I am not talking about needing liquid refreshment. I am referring to a deeper thirst. One that goes down to the soul. People are constantly searching for ways to quench this internal soul thirst. They look everywhere. They will try just about anything. All in this quest to quench that internal thirst for something that will make their lives fulfilling.

Not just pagan people. Even the followers of God are looking to satisfy this deep thirst. They do it today. They did it in Jeremiah's day as well. I guess people will do this until the end of time. Here is the sad thing. The very things people indulge in to satisfy their souls are poor substitutes. They will never give what people are looking for. No matter how much people indulge.

Alcohol promises what it cannot deliver. Sex can only provide temporary ecstasy. Drugs provide a temporary high. Money cannot buy anything that can satisfy our deepest yearnings. Eventually moths and rust will get the best of whatever we purchase. Solomon addressed these facts in his book Ecclesiastes saying the pursuit of the above listened things to find relief and contentment is like chasing after the wind. It is all vanity.

Believers in God can commit two evils just like unbelievers. That means acts of wickedness and wretchedness. What are they?

How easily we forsake God. We discard Him like the trash. Cast Him aside in favor of lesser things. We ignore His calling. We make little time for Him. We look everywhere else to quench our internal thirst but Him. No matter how thirsty our souls are we keep looking in the wrong places. Trying to get a drink from polluted puddles rather than from the fountain of His living water. No matter how many things we try that never satisfy we never seem to learn that HE IS WHAT WE ARE THIRSTY FOR.

Not only that, but we waste time and energy trying to dig our own cisterns. We quarry our own wells thinking we will get a valuable reward for our efforts. Time after time those cisterns cave in producing no life giving water. This is a lesson we should be able to learn after a time or two. The truth is some people can go an entire lifetime and never get it through their thick skulls that Yahweh is the only reality in this universe that can ever satisfy the deepest longings of our soul.

Still we dig. We tunnel. We quarry. We labor. We chase. We also forsake. We go from one spot to another working feverishly thinking we will get what we long for. That is why some people can go from one illicit relationship to another constantly searching but never finding. Constantly drinking but never finding refreshment. Constantly digging but never drinking. Still the vain striving continues.

O that we could learn that God is our cistern. He is a fountain, an eternal spring, of life giving water. He created us. He put eternity in our hearts. A void that can only be filled with Him. In vain we try to shove the square pegs of this world into that round circle He alone can fill.

O that we would learn this lesson. That we would come to Him and drink deeply of Him. We would find all we ever wanted and more. How few are willing. How futile drinking from any other broken cistern always turns out. NOBODY SATISFIES LIKE YAHWEH. NOTHINS SATIATES LIKE JESUS.

It is pure evil to forsake them. It is a wretched thing to try to dig other substitute cisterns that will NEVER hold water. They will always leak and get polluted. They will never satisfy.

We must come before my God this morning to drink deeply of Him. We need to plunge in and drink deeply. He will revive and refresh us for the the battles of the day. He will open our eyes to see the futility of other things that would entice us away from Him. He will keep giving us life. Therefore, we do not come to Him today out of duty. we must come out of sheer delight. He satisfies. We benefit from time with Him. We'd be fools and to forsake Him. Yet, today millions will leave Him forsaken. Many of His very own people. When will the people of God learn? Forsaking Him is forsaking our very lifeline. Come to His fountain of living water and drink deeply. Gulp His life and experience revival. Do not forsake Him today.
