A New Thing

God is always at work around us we learn.

John 5:17 (NKJV)
17  But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."

Everyday He works in various ways. As we walk with Him and He reveals those places He is working we are invited to join Him in these new works. This is part of the thrill of walking closely with Jesus. He invites us to join Him in one adventure after anther.

Sometimes you can wee the adventure coming. Things fall into place. God gives a foreshadowing of what He is about to do. At other times His invitations to join Him may come as complete surprises. How could the disciples have foreknown Jesus would invite them to follow Him. Sometimes the new thing God is doing comes as a complete shock to all involved.

It is imperative to walk closely with the Lord so we are in tune with what He is doing and what He wants to do. It is so easy to get stuck in the old things God used in the past. It is harder to be open when God is doing a new thing. This was true for Israel. They practiced Judaism for centuries. When God predicted the coming of His Messiah Son many of them couldn't handle the new thing God was doing. They rejected the new covenant God made through Jesus and His shed blood.

It's not much different today. God's people are prone to get stuck in the ruts and familiar routines of the past rather than embrace the new things God is doing right in front of our eyes. This can be seen in worship music. It can be seen in new creative ways to reach out. It can also be seen in many dwindling churches who refuse to change or to follow God nor the future. Each year such churches get smaller, the offerings plummet and the moral sinks lower each week. They entrench themselves in their traditions right to the very end.

For any true follower of Jesus what He has on His mind and what He wants to do is far more important than what we want to do. What new thing has God put before you? What new thing is He inviting you to participate? Are you even aware of it? Can you hear God calling and the Spirit nudging you closer to these new things? I trust God to reveal each one of those new things He is doing right around you and before you. Listen and join Him. He is doing a new thing. A fresh thing. Don't miss it.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NKJV)
18  "Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old.
19  Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.
